Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead: A Musical Journey Through Shadows

Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Isle of the Dead is a symphonic poem inspired by Arnold Böcklin’s haunting painting. Composed in 1909, it evokes the slow, steady rowing of a boat approaching a mysterious, shadowy island.

The piece moves through brooding, introspective passages and surging emotional climaxes, incorporating the ancient Dies irae chant to underscore themes of mortality and reflection. Rachmaninoff’s orchestration paints the imagery in sound, blending strings, winds, brass, and percussion into a cinematic experience for the audience.

Maestro Christopher Ramaekers and Symphony847 will guide listeners through this intense, emotionally rich journey on May 23.
