On November 14, Symphony847 opens its 2025–2026 season with a program centered around lyricism, clarity, and musical power. At the heart of the evening is Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 5 in E-flat major, “Emperor,” performed by pianist Amy Wurtz.
Often described as one of the crown jewels of the piano repertoire, the “Emperor” Concerto is a work that both dazzles and speaks intimately. Beethoven expands the concerto form to something symphonic and heroic — but at the same time, it contains some of the most tender, luminous writing he ever composed.
Pianist Amy Wurtz brings a thoughtful, expressive approach to this music. Known not only as a performer, but also as a composer and advocate for contemporary voices, Wurtz is drawn to music with depth, clarity, and emotional honesty — qualities that resonate profoundly in Beethoven’s writing.
The concert opens with Michael Torke’s Ash, a piece bursting with rhythmic pulse and radiant harmony, and continues with Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4 — a joyful, elegant work sometimes overshadowed by the gravity of his Third and Fifth, yet cherished by musicians for its wit, warmth, and invention.
We invite you to join us for a night of vibrant, moving, and inspiring music — right here in Libertyville.
